“Understanding what we’re taught on the Feast of Christ the King and appreciating it as good news explains why this is the most fitting day for me as the Archbishop formerly to outline the course that I first announced to you last Pentecost, namely that from now on our parishes will work together as families in order more effectively to fulfill their mission to evangelize, to tell the world about where we’re heading and how to get there.
The Feast of Christ the King seems the right day to promulgate my Pastoral Note, ‘Led By the Spirit on Mission,’ in which I explain more fully what it means that we will experience our parishes as members of families. In the remainder of my preaching I’d like to share with you some of the light by which after much prayer and wide consultation, I have decided on this path, this path that we’re calling Families of Parishes. This change in the life of our diocese falls within the very context of what we call the Great Commission. Jesus is commissioned to the 11 just before He ascended. To go make disciples of all nations. This is what He made the Church to do and be, to spread this good news.
And so we understand this change in our life and the archdiocese to be a focus once more on the centrality of the Church’s mission to announce the good news. It’s been the call in every age, and it’s our call today. This is what God wants of the local church here in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Lapeer, Monroe, and St. Clair Counties.”
